Must have tool for web/mobile developers – Adobe Shadow

Imagine that you’re developing app on desktop and you want to test it also on mobile devices. It’s quite daunting task to reload all pages and tap on device every time you need refresh. Adobe introduced simple, but powerful solution – Adobe Shadow.

How it works?

Install Adobe Shadow app on you desktop and start it. This will act as bridge between you browser and mobile devices.

Install Adobe Shadow client app on each mobile device and install extension to Google chrome.

Authenticate devices by pass code and start browsing in web browser. It will sync all devices in you WiFi network connected to Shadow. Adobe Shadow will send URL from Google Chrome to all devices and it will keep devices in sync.

This is very handy app for mobile development and testing.

Flash Player for mobile world was replaced by HTML5 and AIR

Flash Player for mobile browsers won’t be in development anymore. This is not big surprise in my opinion.

Adobe shifted focus to AIR for mobile and HTML5. It is possible to build native apps for desktop and mobile with AIR.

Note: Development of Adobe AIR for Linux was cancelled during summer 2011. AIR supports Mac, Win and mobile devices.

You can read more about this game changing decision at Adobe’s blog.

Connect Android to Internet via PC with WiFi

Imagine situation: you have only PC or Notebook with Windows connected to the Internet and you also need to connect Android device to net. There is no WiFi device arround.

First approach is to create just ad-hoc wifi network. The only problem is that Android does not support ad-hoc networks.

Some folks suggest to use VirtualRouter. Unfortunately I had some problems to connect to the network created by this software. This solution doesn’t work for me.

Then I found solution that works like a charm – Connectify.me.

Just turn-on sharing on the device connected to the Internet and choose Home network with virtual interface.

Then start Connectify.me and set up network.

I found another issue related to Lenovo Internet Connection tools. WiFi was shutting down after few minutes. It is quite easy to fix it, when you know where to find right checkbox.

Just open “Lenovo – Internet Connection”, go to Tools. Open Global Settings. Uncheck “Allow wireless radios to be turned off when inactive”. Click ok.

Enjoy WiFi and Android :-)

Gotcha – performance on iOS and Android – Flash Builder – debug vs release

Several developers mentioned tricky gotcha of Flex and ActionScript apps on iOS and Android.

Flash Builder produces debug version of code by default. Debug code contains a lot of additional stuff that slow down application on target device. E.g. You’ll get 5-8 fps. That is very poor.

In order to test performance make sure that you’re using release version of project without debug information. Same code will work much faster – e.g. 20-24 fps.

Collajader Mobile 0.4

Yesterday I made port of Collajader 3D tester to Android. Port was quite simple. The only problem was how to replace mx:Canvas in Spark architecture. It’s quite easy, use s:SpriteVisualElement.

You can test performance of Alternativa 3D on Android platform. UI is clumsy. Primary goal of this release was just to test behavior of Alternativa 3D 7 on Android. It seems that it works ;-)

Download APK: Collajader Mobile v0.4 for Android, grab source code from GitHub.

ColorPicker and DateField in Flex 4.5

ColorPicker is not available in Flex 4.5 with Spark architecture. I found this problem while I was migrating desktop project to mobile AIR for Android.

Fortunately there is solution. Alex Harui wrote simple Spark based components that replace ColorPicker and DataField functionality.

Update: Unfortunetely swatch DropDown component does not work in mobile world. You could not select color from swatch. This problem is bounded to DropDown/ComboBox problem in mobile world. I recieved recommendation from Adobe developers to move DropDown part to new view state and avoid using s:DropDown.

Please drop a comment to this post if you have working mobile colorpicker component.
